Kerry Brodie is the owner of “Suite-ly Styled by Kerry” in Hickory North Carolina. She has been a hair stylist for 13 years. I decided to get her expertise on hair care tips. I have trusted her with my hair for years. Kerry has brought my hair back to life after a lot of abuse caused by myself. We have also been friends for over two decades, so I know the answers will be honest and real.

What is something you would recommend to someone having hair breakage?
If you’ve noticed mystery breakage or shorter, frayed pieces right where your ponytail usually sits, you aren’t alone. When we wear our hair in the exact same spot day after day, it creates a “stress fracture” on those specific strands. That constant tension eventually leads to snapping, which can be a real headache to grow back out.
To keep your hair healthy and strong, try to rotate your style throughout the week. Switching between a high pony, a low bun, or a half-up look helps distribute that pressure so one area isn’t taking the brunt of it every day.
I also recommend reaching for silk scrunchies, spiral “coils,” or claw clips. These are much gentler than traditional thin elastics and help prevent that mechanical damage while still keeping your hair secure. It’s a small change that makes a massive difference for your hair health!
Since it is summer time, what is something you can recommend the blonde girlies to help keep their color looking fabulous if they are having trouble?
The Real Talk: In our neck of the woods, we deal with a lot of mineral-heavy water and older pipes. Sometimes that warm, orange-y tint you’re seeing isn’t a pigment issue; it’s literal rust and mineral buildup (like copper and iron) clinging to your hair.
Here’s the kicker: If you keep layering purple shampoo over mineral buildup, your hair just starts looking “muddy” and dark. You aren’t fixing the color; you’re just staining the rust!
The Professional Fix:
Chelating is Key: Instead of more toner, you need a “Chelating” treatment. This acts like a magnet to pull those heavy metals out of the hair fiber.
The Result: It’s like a detox for your color. Your blonde brightens back up, and your hair actually feels lighter and softer because the “weight” of the minerals is gone.
Pro Tip: If you live in an older home, a simple shower head filter is a game-changer for keeping your salon color fresh between visits.

What advice would you give to the girl that always has that one side of their hair that does not want to cooperate?
It might be your handbag.
The Real Talk: If you’ve noticed mystery breakage or thinning specifically on one side of your head, take a look at how you carry your life.
Whether it’s a heavy work tote, a diaper bag, or even your seatbelt, that constant “grinding” and “pinching” of the hair against your shoulder causes mechanical breakage that no deep conditioner can fix.
I actually started noticing this on myself from carrying heavy bags! It creates a “friction zone” that snaps the mid-shaft of the hair over time.
The Professional Fix:
The Shoulder Flip: Before you put your bag on, flip all your hair to the opposite shoulder.
The “Silk Shield”: If you have a favorite bag you use daily, consider tying a silk scarf around the strap where it hits your shoulder—it’s cute AND it reduces the friction on your strands.
It is June, that means, summer vacations, cook outs, swimming, beach trips. What is something you would recommend to keep from wasting all that money we spend on our hair? Somethings to keep our hair strong and pretty?
Warmer weather means pool and beach days are finally here! But before you dive in, remember that chlorine and salt are “moisture thieves.” Here is my foolproof routine to keep your color vibrant and your ends hydrated all summer long:
The Pre-Swim Shield: Before you hit the water, rinse your hair with fresh tap water. While it’s damp, spray a generous amount of leave-in conditioner through your ends. Your hair is like a sponge—if it’s already full of clean water and conditioner, it can’t soak up the harsh pool chemicals.
The Essential After-Rinse: This is the most important step! As soon as you step out of the water, rinse your hair again with fresh water. You want to flush out any surface salt or chlorine before it has a chance to dry and sit on your cuticle.
SPF for your Strands: UV rays can break down hair protein and fade your toner. A quick mist of a UV-protectant spray before you head outside keeps your “Suite-ly” glow lasting longer.

Is it true that how we treat our scalp affects how our hair grows?
Your scalp is skin, too!
We spend so much time focusing on the ends of our hair that we forget where it all begins. Think of your scalp like a garden—you can’t grow beautiful flowers in tired, congested soil.
The Strategy: The Double-Cleanse Method.
Just like a skincare routine, your hair benefits from a deep “reset” once a month.
The Exfoliant: Use a physical scalp scrub or a salicylic acid-based treatment to break down product buildup and dead skin cells.
The Stimulator: Use a silicone scalp massager while you shampoo. It increases blood flow to the follicles, which encourages faster, healthier growth.
The Hydrator: After a detox, always follow up with a scalp-safe serum or a lightweight conditioner (ends only!) to keep things balanced.
What would you recommended to someone that can’t decide on what color they want to change their hair to?
Don’t choose a color because it’s “in style”—choose it because of how it makes you feel when you wake up! ![]()
That starts with what makes YOU feel amazing. Whether you’re vibing with a cool lilac, a sun-kissed honey, or a rich espresso, your hair is your ultimate canvas. ![]()
The Tip: When you’re stuck between “Cool” or “Warm,” look at your jewelry box!
If you love how Silver looks against your skin, you’ll likely love those icy, cool tones. ![]()
If Gold is your go-to, those warm, sun-drenched shades will make your skin glow. ![]()
Forget the “rules” of the season—the only trend that matters is the one that makes you glow from the inside out.
What is going on with our hair if it feels “mushy” when we wash it? Are there things we can do to fix it?
You need a Bridge!
If your hair is a story, Bonds are the spine of the book. Without a strong spine, the pages (your hair strands) start to fall out or tear.
The Problem: Heat, coloring, and even rough brushing break the tiny chemical bonds inside your hair. When these break, your hair loses its “spring” and starts to feel like wet noodles or snap off like dry twigs.
The Solution: Bond-Builders.
Conditioners are like a nice cover for the book (smooths the surface).
Bond-Builders are like the glue and stitching (fixes the internal structure).
Pro Tip: You don’t need a bond-builder every single day! Think of it as “Internal Maintenance.” Use it once a week to keep the “spine” of your hair story strong so you can keep growing it longer and stronger.
