I was a teenager in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. During this time the trend was “you could not be too skinny.” Low rise jeans were the thing flying off the shelves. A size 00, 0 or 2 model was on every runway, magazine, tv show, movie, and advertisement. Most of these gave the impression that being blonde meant you would be more popular and have more fun as well.
Myself, being a fashion lover, had a pair or 2 of low rise jeans. The problem was I was not nor had I ever been a size 2 much less smaller. I was always the tallest or one of the tallest girls I knew. I also have my grandmother’s hips, so even if I starved myself I would never be a size that small. And I have had size 10 feet since the 5th grade. However, low rise jeans it was! I was fairly skinny back then, but I was never a stick. That did not stop me from wearing them. I would wear a lot of halter tops. They were flattering because they looked good and were loose enough around the “muffin top” area. I also would sometimes were a cami or tank top and layer a jacket over it. You could still see the low rise jeans but the back and sides were covered. Everyone should try to make any style your own and to be comfortable in it. If you feel comfortable in your outfit you will definitely be more confident. Confidence makes anything you wear look much more attractive.
Being platinum blonde was huge back then. It was hard and expensive to maintain if your hair color is not blonde to begin with. Everywhere you looked there was a how to be skinnier, prettier, or a “if you look like this or dress like this” advertisement for something.
I still struggle with body image and liking myself every single day. I cetainly have gained weight since this time period and now have very dark hair as you can tell from my profile picture. I hope to one day completely love how I look and be happy with ME in anything I chose to wear.
I have more hope for teenagers today. They no longer have to be super skinny or blonde to be famous or popular or just to fit in. Runways, Advertisements, and TV shows now have people of all different body shapes and sizes. This is a huge step forward for all women to have better self confidence in their bodies in my opinion. I hope things like this continue. All of us are unique and that is what makes each of us, us!
In an upcoming blog I will talk about somethings I have done to help myself with my body image issues.
Feel confident and it will show. Flaunt what you have!
