Labor Day weekend has just passed. The unofficial end of summer. Cookouts, beach days, camping, pool parties, they are all dwindling. But why the saying “you can’t wear white after Labor Day”?
I feel like this is out dated in so many ways. I love to wear white in the winter. I think it is cute.
A white puffer coat. A white toboggan or beanie. A white handbag. A white sweater. A pair of white boots.
All very chic ideas on wearing white after labor day. Winter white is great if you ask me.
So the question, how did this you can’t wear white after Labor Day come about?
I have researched and read many different things online. I guess no one knows for sure as to why or how this came about.
The first and most common origin I found was that it was created for the elite to show off their status. The more well to do families and people could afford to go somewhere warmer for the fall and winter months and still wear their white clothes. While the normal people had to drag out their dark clothes and endure the colder months.
The other reason I came across was that many years ago most clothing and outfits people wore out in public were more formal than what we wear now days. Meaning that a lot more of the body was covered. A lot of times with layers. Due to this, it was more sensible to wear white in the summer to try and keep the heat off of them better. Darker colored clothing were worn in the cooler months to try to help stay warmer.
No matter how the stigma to not wear white after Labor Day came about, I feel it is super out dated. Wear white whenever and how ever you want.
